NOTES FOUND, COURT TOLD

MELBOURNE, Tuesday. – – A cache of notes found in the home of a Melbourne man was thought to be valuable evidence in relation to the Victorian Club robbery, an armed robbery squad detective told the Melbourne City Court today.

Detective-Senior Constable Alexander Adams said he went to the man’s home in Kett Street, Nunawading on July. 14, looking for a man known as Stanley Ernest James.

He said Mr James was wanted for questioning in connection with the Victorian Club robbery in April this year.

Detective Adams said Mr Daniel Hacking opened the door of his home wearing pyjamas when he went with other police to Kett Street at 10.35pm on July 14.

He said he found large bundles of money in a plastic bag in a set of drawers in a built-in wardrobe. He said Mr Hacking told him he was looking after the money for his brother-in-law, Mr Stan James.

Mr Hacking and his wife were charged with having unlawfully possessed $11,400 in notes of various denominations reasonably suspected of being stolen, and with having handled the same amount of money, knowing it was stolen, between June 1 and July 14 this year.

Mr Hacking was committed for trial on the second charge. He pleaded not guilty and was allowed bail of S500 with a similar surety.

The charge of having unlawfully possessed the money was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Charges against Mrs Hacking were dismissed.

Mr Norman Leung Lee, 28, of Kerferd Street, Essendon, appeared in the Melbourne City Court today on a charge involving the robbery of $1.3 million.

Mr Lee, a dim sim maker, is charged with armed robbery on Mr Norman Paragree. an armed guard, of $1,387,540 at the Victorian Club in Queen Street on April 21.

Mr Lee is also charged with having received $124,000 in cash between April 21 and October 5.

Mr Lee was recently granted bail in the Supreme Court.

Mr L. T. Griffin CSM respited his bail today and adjourned the charges to March 24 next year.

Sergeant pocketed bail: witness

MELBOURNE: A Sydney man told the County Court in Melbourne yesterday that a St Kilda policeman had pocketed $500 that he had given to him for bail money in 1977.

Mr John Mitchell Purvis, of Rose Bay, told the court he thought he had “been had” after the policeman refused to give him a receipt for the money.

Mr Purvis was giving evidence before Judge Ravech at the trial of a suspended policeman, Sergeant Alexander David Adams.

Sergeant Adams has pleaded not guilty to having obtained $500 by deception, having stolen $500 and having received a secret commission of $500.

The Crown prosecutor, Mr J. T. Hassett, told the jury that the charges were alternative counts and related to an incident alleged to have occurred on August 3 at the St Kilda CIB office.

Mr Hassett said that Mr Purvis had owned a milk bar in Elwood in August last year and Sergeant Adams had been one of a number of policemen who questioned him about stolen property found in his shop.

He said Mr Purvis had been taken to the Prahran police station to be charged with receiving stolen property and had asked Sergeant Adams on the way about bail.

Mr Hassett said Sergeant Adams asked him, “How would $500 suit?” Mr Purvis had later been released on bail on his own undertaking, which meant he did not have to lodge any bail money.

Mr Purvis said that Sergeant Adams asked him to come to the St Kilda CIB the next day and he thought he was going there “to pay bail money”.

He went to the CIB office the next morning and gave Sergeant Adams $500 in cash.

“I took the money out and gave it to Adams and asked for a receipt”, he said.

“He said, ‘You’re not getting a receipt’. He took the money and stuck it in his pocket”.

The trial continues today.

Death of former Illawarra police officer Steven ‘Jonno’ Johnson shocks community

The Illawarra police community is mourning the sudden loss of a well-loved and respected senior community-based cop.

Chief Inspector Steven “Jonno” Johnson, formerly of Lake Illawarra and the Shoalhaven commands died unexpectedly on Tuesday.

“Jonno will be very much missed by everyone he knew,” a long-time colleague told the Mercury.

“He was one of those quirky people who would always put a smile on your face by one of his many stories or passions that he was involved with,” the police officer said.

“I don’t think people realise the amount of work he did for the Aboriginal community, for conservation with his fishing and general community causes. He had a strong passion for fishing and if anyone showed a slight inkling of interest he would have them straight on his boat and take them out.

“Jonno was one of those people who got more satisfaction from doing things for others than for himself.”

Tributes are flowing on Facebook for the 47-year-old officer being remembered “as a legendary and inspirational man”.

Senior Constable Koz Ismail, who worked with Jonno at Lake Illawarra and has produced a video tribute, said his colleague was “a man of endless empathy”.

( see video above )

“He worked for the community, he was an endless supporter of the youth and indigenous youth.

“He was passionate to the case of youth mental health, always put the community and his peers first before himself.

“He was a loving family man, a selfless community man and police officer.”

POLICE FUNERAL IN NEWCASTLE

LATE SERGEANT W. A. STUBBS

Impressive scenes marked the police funeral this afternoon of Sergeant W. A. Stubbs, who died at his home at Merewether on Tuesday after a long Illness. A large party of police marched before and after the flag-draped coffin through the city to the railway station and the cortege was headed by the military band of the 2/35th Battalion, with drums draped in crape.

Footpaths on both sides of Hunter street along the route of the funeral procession were lined with people.

The Commissioner of Police was represented by the Superintendent of the North-Eastern Area (Mr. J. W. White) and other police officials present were Inspectors W. A. Davis and A. G. McAlpin. A large number of representatives of the Retired Police Association marched in the cortege.

After the military band, marched the funeral escort of 20 constables, six sergeants, a commissioned officer and the police drill instructor (Constable S. ( Stephen ) Pender), who had charge of police marching arrangements at the funeral. After the hearse, marched the remainder of the police to the mourning party.

NEW POLICE SCHEME

NEWCASTLE WEST NOW LOCK-UP DOOM OF THE BEAT

The introduction of police mobile patrols into the Newcastle district in the near future, will spell the doom of the beat system, which has been in existence for many years.

A direct result of the comprehensive reorganisation of the force, which was commenced immediately the new Commissioner of Police (Mr. Mackay) took office, will be the withdrawal of many officers from suburban stations, which will be converted into lock-ups, each attended by a resident constable.

The first step in this direction was taken yesterday when Sergeant Dean, who is at present on extended leave, and Sergeant Stubbs were transferred to Newcastle headquarters, leaving Constable Dawes in charge.

Similar procedure will be followed gradually at many suburban stations.

As the change proceeds Hamilton will become the base for motor cycles and cars, in which policemen and detectives will tour adjoining municipalities.

CRUISING PATROLS

Call boxes will be established throughout the Newcastle district, from which cruising patrols will report at regular intervals to headquarters. By this means it is hoped to reduce such crimes as housebreaking, as one of the many patrols will be in almost constant touch with headquarters and can be despatched to the scene of a robbery immediately information is received. The quicker moving mobile patrols will make the task of the burglar much more hazardous than hitherto.

It is expected that many of the men will be absorbed in the mobile division, and some others will be transferred to Sydney.

The revolutionary changes to be made are not an experiment. A scheme on the same lines has been put into operation in Sydney, and apparently is giving satisfaction.

SERGEANT SAID HE WAS KICKED

WILD SCENE AT POLICE STATION

The story of a wild scene at Hunter street West police station, in the course of which a police sergeant was kicked in the stomach and had his nose broken by a prisoner, was told at Newcastle Police Court this afternoon.

It was also alleged by a constable, who said he was summoned to the station from an adjoining patrol, that the prisoner hurled a tub at his head.

Thomas Cullen (31), laborer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having assaulted Sergeant Stubbs, and beaten and otherwise ill-treated him, causing him actual bodily harm, on December 16.

Sergeant Stubbs said that after having arrested Cullen for being drunk, he told him that it had been alleged against him that he had assaulted a man after asking him for sixpence.

Continuing, the sergeant said that when they were within 30 yards of the police station at Newcastle West, Cullen punched him on the head and knocked his cap off.

The sergeant said that he then held down his prisoner by the leg and arm, and asked a passer-by to restore his cap to his head.

Later, while they were going up the steps of the passage way, Cullen kicked him in the stomach.

In the charge room he did the same thing again, so the sergeant, threw him to the floor.

After taking Cullen to a cell, said the sergeant, he was fixing up the prisoner with blankets, when Cullen again kicked him in the stomach and punched his nose, making it bleed.

Subsequently the sergeant was taken by the ambulance to a surgery, and the doctor found his nose was broken.

A FORWARD KICK

To Mr. O’Neill (for Cullen), Sergeant Stubbs denied that he had drawn his baton at any stage. The kick was what would be called on the football field a forward kick. He did not know that Cullen had been treated for severe injuries. He had thrown Cullen in the charge room, and he might have been injured while assaulting other men.

Constable Page, of Wickham, said he found the sergeant sitting down dazed, and bleeding from the nose.

DREW HIS BATON

” When I went to the cell, ” he added, ” Cullen said he would bash my head in if I came in, the same as he had done to the sergeant. ”

” I asked him to hand over the cell tub, and he rushed across and hurled it at my head. It hit the door as I closed It. ”

To Mr. O’Neill, the constable said that he pulled out his baton before opening the cell door.

(Proceeding.)

It was Rob’s wish to be at home and with his family.  It was also his wish to share this prepared post:
” The problem when suddenly faced with your own mortality is timing.  Initially, you think you have no time to do everything you planned to do with your life.
Then you think you have plenty of time.  Time to tell people the important things.  How much you love them.  How much they mean to you.
Now arrived the time when the newest scare returns.  It’s been a few weeks coming, but now I know it’s the real thing, the real McCoy.
It’s now not a matter of timing, I know there’s none left.
I won’t tell you not to be sad, because if it were any of you, I’d be sad.  just know that I’m at ease and have come to terms with it.
You just need to know, my life has been better for having you in it.  I draw great comfort from your friendship, your kindness, and your love.  Simply put, my life is better for having known you. “
Rob Sasagi.
Sausage was such a loved part of Illawarra Policing that when is plight became known, his Blue Family, blood family, his friends and businesses came out of the woodwork in March 2016 to raise much needed, and very much appreciated, funds which enabled Sausage and his family to fulfil their bucket list and spend that quality family time together in which to make life time memories for the family.
May Sausage forever Rest In eternal Peace.

An insight of a man fighting Cancer

9 February 2018

This is Robs latest post 😍💙

Okey dokey, my long delayed update and promised anniversary summary.
Perusing my last update I mentioned upcoming surgery which took place near the end of November. Day surgery turned into major surgery and to say I was a little miffed when I woke up with tubes out of most orifices would be an understatement. It made for a miserable December, being for the most part bedridden.
Beginning of January signalled a slow turnaround of sorts. Things still aren’t great but there is some improvement.
In the immortal words of Tim Rogers, ‘I’m thinner than I should be’, tipping the scales at a whopping 70 kilos. I’m still vomiting although not on the previous scale. I’m limited on the volume of food my body will allow me to eat. The amount of muscle wastage still has me weak as a kitten but I’m better than I was.
In short, I’m slowly getting stronger. It’s a very long road but I’m ALIVE, a subject I’ll address in a moment.
Prior to my trip to New Zealand I had to obtain the all clear from my Oncologist which was timed with scans, being end of January.
Result of scans was again positive. Big boy is still unchanged and secondaries are either the same or have shrunk a bit.
In a nutshell, the Clinical trial is working a treat. What we need now is the rest of the body to play ball, but as the Oncologist said, with all that’s happened to it, it’s a wonder it functions at all. Like me, my body is too stupid to know when it’s beat. We’ll see.
Alrighty!!!
Funnily enough surgery time coincided with the prognosis anniversary, 2 years since the news was broken to us.
I’m long since supposed to have left this mortal coil, so to say I’m pleased with myself would be another understatement. I’m not given to bouts of braggadocio but I will allow myself this one. Given what I’ve been forced to endure, especially this last 9 months a serious “Fuck you Cancer” is in order.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If not for my family and friends, I can honestly say I would have given up the ghost a long time ago.
I know you say I’m strong but there have been many many quiet moments when it’s all seemed hopeless. Sometimes it’s like I’m sending out a telepathic signal, because around that time someone wants to meet up and chat.
There are a lot of you, too numerous to mention but I feel I must at least name and shame my serial pests.
Shannon Arnold , Scott Nicholls , Dean Richens , you three in varying degrees have kept on me, drawing me away from all my vain attempts at self pity. I’ll have my revenge upon you, just you wait. One day you’ll want to feel sorry for yourself and I’ll be there to lift you up. Aaah, vengance be mine.
Mention must be made to NSW Police Force, Wollongong Local Area Command. The amount of care and compassion I’ve received has been completely humbling.
All staff at Wollongong, downstairs to upstairs have been nothing short of magnificent.
The admin staff have pretty much taken care of everything for me, nothing is too hard. Life is so much easier with my blue family in my corner.
Coming up. Well since I managed NZ my next target is Bali in March with serial pests Shannon Arnold , Stew Art , and Scott Nicholls. Should be a quiet one.
Next is Uluru in May. My crazy wife Kathryn Bailey is doing the Larapinta track walk for ‘Chris O’Brien Lifehouse ‘ which is 5 days. We’ll meet her up there and take her poor exhausted body back to Uluru and a bit of resort living for a few days.
Phew!! Still here.
So, here I am, over two years down the track. Still alive and kicking despite the best efforts of this miserable disease. I’ll admit it, there’s been very hard times, times which make you question everything and whether it’s worth it and times you’re ready to give up.
As they say in The Shawshank Redemption (mine and pretty much every mans favourite movie),
“Get busy living or get busy dying.”
I think I’m managing both quite well thank you very much.
Well, if you silly buggers are still here for the ride, then I may as well stick around for a bit longer.
Talk to you all later.

Rob Sasagi

‘True gentleman’: Much-loved Wollongong cop Robert Sasagi dies

Robert Lawrence SASAGI

Police officer Robert Sasagi knew his time had run out. He’d had ups and downs during his three-year cancer battle, but this time it was the real thing, the “Real McCoy”.

He’d known it for a few weeks. He wrote it down in a post he asked his wife Kath to share once he had gone.

The much-loved Wollongong cop died on Sunday, but not before spending one last birthday on Friday with his wife and children. And not before his NSW Police Force colleagues showed one last sign of respect.

Wollongong commander Superintendent Chris Craner paid a personal visit to Constable Sasagi’s bedside in Austinmer on Friday to deliver news he had been promoted to senior constable.

Supt Craner said Rob was considered a “senior mentor for the troops”, had worked as a senior investigator and deserved the promotion.

The boss made a special application to NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and had it approved post-haste.

”It’s an emotional time for his family and colleagues and it’s important that he was appropriately recognised,” Supt Craner told the Mercury.

Word of the senior constable’s death spread quickly, with tributes flowing from police and members of the broader community.

A keen footy player, the Wollongong Police Falcons said the world had lost one of its greats.

“He will be remembered as the true gentleman that he was and one of the toughest blokes I know to pull on a Falcons jersey,” the club said.

A career highlight was Rob’s 2014 commendation for brave conduct. Whilst off-duty, he witnessed a man clutch a bloodied arm on a passenger train. He disarmed the offender and detained her until on-duty police arrived.

According to his wife Kath, Rob wanted to spend his last days at home and she felt lucky his wish came true. She shared on Facebook the post he had prepared.

“The problem when suddenly faced with your own mortality is timing,” he wrote.

Robert SASAGI

On the job:  Senior Constable Rob Sasagi during a major drug raid in December 2016. The popular police officer died on Sunday. Picture: Robert Peet

“Initially, you think you have no time to do everything you planned to do with your life. Then you think you have plenty of time. Time to tell people the important things … Now arrives the time when the newest scare returns.

“It’s not a matter of timing, I know there’s none left. I won’t tell you not to be sad, because if it were any of you, I’d be sad. Just know that I’m at ease and have come to terms with it.”

One of two stories. I might leave Arthur ‘Neddie’ Smiths story for another time in the future…..a very long time in the future. Other story.

Fairly certain it was a Sunday night, and while having a game of snooker in the meal room at Pyrmont, with Brian Mackinlay, (rip), a call was received.

Headed out with all lights off down to a back lane in Pyrmont. I am fairly certain it was Paternoster Row.

We pulled up and crept up to the house on the corner. We took little interest in the tailights disappearing in the distance. As we were about to kick the door in, an old woman opens it and says, “too bad boys, Mad Dog left here 30 seconds ago”.

Seems the tailights were that of the car which housed Russell ‘Mad dog‘ Cox, as he had been holed up in this particular house for 4 days before someone dobbed him in, and we were 30 seconds late in grabbing him.

During my service, I was Stationed at the township of Gunning and on many occasions, had to ask the assistance from the Lockup Keeper at Yass, Roy Allan was his name, and he never hesitated to attend and assist, as all Cops do, we became close friends, family included, then one day after being transferred to Tweed Heads I happened to pick up a magazine, “New Idea” dated 4/2/89 and was dumbstruck with what I read,…. two pages were removed from the book, however, I can only locate one at this stage….

My condolences to you, your girls, yours and Nathan’s family. Sending love to you all.

So shocked to hear this awful news. I knew Nathan (known to me as Vern) only through Flickr – and had been off the site for a long time. Just recently I visited the Blue Mountains and thought of him and his beautiful images and wondered about their locations. When I got home to far north Queensland, I looked him up again and read of his death in Mt Cook – a place I came to know partly because of his adventures there and the beautiful photographs he shared via Flickr.
I am so sad to hear he is gone. Although I knew him only through Flickr, he was always a humourous and encouraging photography muse. Unlike so many in the online world, he was the real deal and I felt like I knew him. I am not surprised to learn that he worked serving others in the police force. The world will be poorer without him.
Heartfelt condolences to his wife and children.

Pippa Brown on 10 December, 2018 at 8:39am

I am so sorry to hear of Nathan’s tragic death. I got to know him through Flickr and then Facebook and loved to see his adventures and the way he introduced his young daughters to the outdoors and adventure. My deepest condolences to family, friends and work colleagues.

Daryl and Evelyn Peninton on 6 December, 2018 at 8:59pm

There are so many memories… seeing Nathan pull up in his red Jeep and pull out his guitar whenever he played at church. Seeing him onstage with the band Oracle, organising youth events with him and Skye and the team, flatbed truck rides at youth camp, but my favourite memory was when he used to come over to our place once a week and he, Daryl and I would watch “the Contender” reality tv series. One night he walked in and handed Daryl a packet of mint slice, it was open and a couple were missing. He just smiled and said “sorry, I got hungry”. We often recall those great times we all shared doing youth together. You will be missed Vern, Rest In Peace.

Nathan Deutschbein aka Dutchy epitomised what a person would expect in a mate, work colleague and for those closer to him a husband, dad and relative. Nathan had a genuineness that is rarely seen.

His passing is a tragedy and causes reflection on what we all value from life and how precious that it is. If Nathan’s legacy becomes our own benchmark on how we do things, care for people and enjoy life generally – we can only be better off for that.

The blue family will be awesome to support his family and foster his memory.

The wife of the Australian climber killed in an avalanche in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park yesterday has posted a moving tribute to their family’s “Captain Awesome“.

Nathan Deutschbein, a senior New South Wales police officer and father of two girls, died while descending The Footstool, a prominent, 2764m-tall peak on the Main Divide about 8km from Aoraki/Mount Cook village.

The 40-year-old was a senior constable in the Blue Mountains Area Command.

Wife Skye Deutschbein said on social media, “Our beloved Nathan was in an avalanche on the mountain he was climbing yesterday and did not survive. We are broken and cannot imagine a world without him. He was our Captain Awesome.”

In an earlier post, she indicated her husband and two companions were planning to climb 3109m Mt Elie De Beaumont at the head of the Tasman Glacier.

A Gofundme page has been set up to support Deutschbein’s wife Skye and their two young daughters.

“Our hearts are utterly devastated for Skye,” said page administrator Shalene Roberts.

“We are praying fervently and trusting Christ to comfort Skye and the girls during this tragic time, and we ask that you do the same.

“We also know that many expenses lie ahead for the family, and we would like to try to ease some of that burden.

“The Christmas holiday this year is going to be exceptionally hard, and we don’t want financial need to compound the devastation.”

The tragic incident occurred around 1.30pm yesterday as Deutschbein and a fellow mountaineer were descending the Eugenie Glacier on the eastern flank of Footstool.

Department of Conservation Aoraki/Mt Cook operations manager Brent Swanson told Newshub the 20m-wide avalanche travelled 300m, pushing the climbers into a crevasse, making their rescue difficult.

A helicopter couldn’t land so a DoC staff member suspended on a fixed-line recovered the injured climber and Deutschbein.

The New South Wales Blue Heelers, a group of police officers who represented their state each year in the National Police Australian Football Championships, described him as a “genuine good bloke“.

Thoughts today with the friends and family of Senior Constable Nathan Deutschbein of the Blue Mountains PAC who was tragically killed yesterday in New Zealand,” the group wrote on Facebook.

Known as a really great person who served the community of the Blue Mountains in both general duties and as a police rescue operator.

He will be missed by many.”

The Australian police said they were offering support and condolences to the Deutschbein’s wife and family.

Sources have told the Herald Deutschbein was an experienced mountaineer, who regularly visited New Zealand to climb peaks in the Southern Alps.

An adventure website run by Deutschbein showed spectacular images from his trips to New Zealand, including of climbing 3033m-high Mt Aspiring and 2627m-high Mt Sealy.

Friends had been posting messages of support for the family and tributes to Deutschbein on Facebook.

Nathan is going to be so missed. Such an incredible man,” one said.

Another wrote of their disbelief saying, “I’m so deeply sorry . I’m having such trouble believing this. Beyond devastated.

( N.Z. Police ) Mid-South Canterbury Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said it was difficult to say why the avalanche was set off but it was more than probable the group triggered it while crossing the snow field as the snow conditions were pretty unstable.

Two other people were climbing with the person who died – one had minor injuries and the other was uninjured because he had remained at the hut that day.

Gaskin said police had no details of the mountaineers but understood they were reasonably proficient and experienced.

Gaskin said the mountaineer who was uninjured had stayed behind at the Sefton Bivouac hut because they were sick.

The climber who suffered minor injuries was transported to Twizel for medical treatment.

Deutschbein‘s death had been referred to the coroner.

MetService reports Mt Cook’s weather for today was fine spells, with a chance of a shower or two with light winds and a high of 18C.

Gaskin said there was a risk for loose, wet avalanches at the time above 1200m.

“There are various types of snow pack conditions, so loose and wet is as it sounds,’ he said.

“It’s quite a slushy, icy mixture, that condition can mean that sort of avalanche can run a lot further than a typical slab avalanche which is nicely bound together.”

The Sefton Bivvy area was the scene of a death in September 2013. British man Robert Buckley, 32, was trying to reach the small hut 1660m above sea level with three friends when he suffered a fatal fall on steep ground, 80m short of the hut.

The latest tragedy comes after two mountain guides were killed last month in an avalanche on Mt Hicks that also buried adventurer and philanthropist Jo Morgan.

Morgan was lucky to escape with her life and told media at the time she was “gobsmacked” to be alive after digging herself out.

Her climbing partners Martin Hess and Wolfgang Maier – who were both originally from Germany but had become New Zealand residents – died.

Morgan had been roped to the two experienced mountain guides when the avalanche hit, but she was unable to find them after being sent tumbling up to 200m down the mountain.

“None of us had any control over it.”

Morgan was rescued after setting off a personal locator beacon.

NSW police officer killed in New Zealand avalanche

Updated

NSW Police are mourning the loss of a second officer killed in New Zealand’s south island this year after a senior constable died when he was hit by an avalanche.

Key points:

  • NSW officer Nathan Deutschbein was trekking in New Zealand when the avalanche hit
  • Another man was injured in the incident, and a third trekker who stayed behind in a camp escaped unharmed
  • Mr Deutschbein’s wife Skye has said she was “broken” after hearing of her husband’s death

Nathan Deutschbein, 40, a member of Blue Mountains area command, was trekking in the Mount Cook area on Thursday when he and his companion triggered a small avalanche that pushed them into a crevasse.

New Zealand police said Mr Deutschbein‘s companion, who was left with minor injuries, was unable to get to the 40-year-old in time to rescue him.

Mr Deutschbein, who leaves behind a wife and two children, is the second NSW police officer to be killed in New Zealand’s south island this year after 31-year-old Joshua Paroci died while rafting near Queenstown in May.

Both men were off duty and holidaying at the time.

Posting on social media, Mr Deutschbein’s wife Skye said the family is “broken”.

“[We] cannot imagine a world without him. He was our Captain Awesome,” she said in the post.

“I will be off social media for a time but will keep you informed of funeral details when we know more.

“Thank you for your prayers. They are the only thing keeping us right now.”

The pair had celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary earlier in the month.

NSW Police said he was a leading senior constable with the Blue Mountains Police Area Command and were offering support and condolences to the officers wife and family.

Speaking on the incident on Friday, New Zealand police said the hiking pair had turned back due to poor weather when the avalanche hit.

The NSW police officer’s hiking partner was winched out by a helicopter after setting off a locator beacon.

A third member of their party had been unwell in the morning and stayed behind in a hut.

He and the injured hiker were later flown off the mountain.

The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council had warned of a moderate avalanche risk above 1200m because of loose snow and poor weather in the days prior.

“[It’s] an inherently dangerous place to go,” a spokesman said.

Thursday’s event was the second deadly avalanche at the national park in recent weeks.

Last month, on nearby Mount Hicks, New Zealand adventurer Jo Morgan managed to dig her way out of the snow that killed her two companions, Martin Hess and Wolfgang Maier.

Police rescue officer killed in New Zealand

Nathan Deutschbein, a Blue Mountains police rescue officer, was killed in an avalanche in New Zealand last week.

Leading Senior Constable Deutschbein, 40, had served with the rescue squad in the Mountains since 2016. He joined the NSW Police Force in 2011 after transferring from Tasmania.

He was climbing on Mt Cook in New Zealand’s south island when he was caught in an avalanche last Thursday. His climbing companion suffered minor injuries.

Fellow Police Rescue officer, Senior Constable Steve Day, said Constable Deutschbein had been a gifted worker whose experience as a mountaineer meant he could quickly figure out the best way to reach people stuck in canyons or on cliffs.

“He had the ability to assess and come up with the best possible system for accessing them,” he said.

“He was literally one of our best operators and a very experienced roper.”

He had innate skills that just can’t be taught, Constable Day said.

“He was a very good asset to the rescue squad – confident and able to exercise initiative.

“With the type of skills he had, he will be one of the biggest losses to the squad.”

Constable Day described his colleague as “one of those genuine guys that everyone liked”.

NSW Police issued a statement offering support and condolences. It said the family and colleagues had requested privacy.

NSW Police Legacy has established an appeal to raise funds for Constable Deutschbein’s wife, Skye, and their two daughters.

Its Facebook page described him as someone who earned “high praise for his work and loyalty from his friends and colleagues”.

“Nathan thrived in the outdoors and loved adventure. He could only be described as a man who lived life to the full and his passion rubbed off on everyone around him.”

Donations to the Deutschbein family can be made at http://deutschbeinfamilyappeal.gofundraise.com.au/.

Julie Burton, from the OzCanyons Facebook group, posted a link to the fundraising page: “This fella was one of us, and also a member of Blue Mountains Police Rescue and more than likely came to help when one of us was in trouble in a canyon. We knew him as Von Dutchy.”

The mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said the news was “devastating”.

“The love of our whole community goes out to Nathan’s family, friends and colleagues. He was such an admired and respected person.”

The New Zealand Department of Conservation Aoraki/Mt Cook operation manager, Brent Swanson, said the incident highlighted the risks involved in exploring the country’s mountains.

RIP Detective Senior Constable Joshua Paroci,
Our respect and condolences from our families to yours. And the Thin Blue Line.
Thank you for your service Sir ????

The NSW Police Force regrets to inform the community of the death of a serving police officer in an accident in New Zealand.

Detective Senior Constable Joshua Paroci, aged 31, died following a rafting incident in Queenstown, New Zealand on Saturday (19 May 2018).

Det S/C Paroci joined the force in 2008 and was most recently working at the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

Commissioner Mick Fuller extended condolences to the Paroci family on behalf of the NSW Police Force.

“The hardest part of my job is when we lose one of our own and my thoughts are with Det S/C Paroci’s wife, who is also a police officer, family, friends and colleagues,” Commissioner Fuller said.

Det S/C Paroci was well respected by all those who knew him, and the police family will rally around his loved ones during this difficult time.

Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec, said Josh was a great man and an excellent detective, and will be sorely missed by the team.

“Professionally, Josh was a tireless worker; dedicated to investigating some of the most heinous crimes against children,” Det Supt Kerlatec said.

“His passion was justice for victims. Not only was he a police officer, he was completing a law degree, which he intended to use to create better outcomes for young victims.

Josh was inspirational, and everywhere he worked, he turned colleagues into mates; today, we mourn the loss of our good mate.”

Det S/C Paroci’s family have requested their privacy at this time.

New Zealand Police continue to make inquiries on behalf of the Coroner, and with the assistance of Maritime NZ, which is conducting its own investigation into what happened.

Tributes flow for Australian policeman killed in rafting accident near Queenstown

The Australian man who died in a rafting incident near Queenstown was a detective senior constable with the New South Wales police force.

Joshua Paroci, 31, was one of a group of six Australians rafting on Saturday afternoon with Challenge Rafting on the Shotover River when they overturned near the Toilet Rapids.

Company spokeswoman Tsehai Tiffin said Paroci was being brought back from the far side of the river when he lost his grip on the rescue rope and was swept to the next rapid.

He was helped by a safety kayaker through another rapid and then to shore, but lost consciousness and could not be revived.

NSW police Commissioner Mick Fuller said Paroci would be missed.

“The hardest part of my job is when we lose one of our own and my thoughts are with Detective S/C Paroci’s wife, who is also a police officer, family, friends and colleagues,” he said in a statement.

Detective S/C Paroci was well respected by all those who knew him, and the police family will rally around his loved ones during this difficult time.”

It was the second death on the same section of the river within two months after guide Keith Haare, 62, also known as Chief, died from a medical event in late March.

Tiffin said Challenge Rafting offered its “deepest sympathy to [Paroci‘s] family and friends”.

It was not unusual for rafts to overturn on grade four or five rivers, like the Shotover, Tiffin said. Customers were issued with equipment to help keep them warm and safe, including a wetsuit, neoprene jacket, booties, spray jacket, lifejacket and helmet.

Another member of the same group was injured and was flown to Lakes District Hospital for treatment. The rest of the group were flown out by helicopter and all flew back to Australia on Monday morning.

The weather was fine and sunny on Saturday and the river was at a medium to low flow at 16 cubic metres a second, well within standard operating parameters, Tiffin said.

Challenge Rafting worked closely with Queenstown Rafting, whose general manager, Luke Taylor, said he and his staff were devastated.

“Our hearts go out to our guests and the families of those involved in this. Both our companies wish to offer the group our sincere condolences and ongoing support,” he said.

Queenstown Rafting and Challenge Rafting have voluntarily suspended operations on the river until further notice.

NSW child abuse and sex crimes squad Commander, Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec described Paroci as a great man and an excellent detective, who would be sorely missed by the team.

“Professionally, Josh was a tireless worker; dedicated to investigating some of the most heinous crimes against children,” he said.

“His passion was justice for victims. Not only was he a police officer, he was completing a law degree, which he intended to use to create better outcomes for young victims.

“Josh was inspirational, and everywhere he worked, he turned colleagues into mates; today, we mourn the loss of our good mate.”

Police said they were investigating the cause of Saturday’s incident, and Maritime New Zealand was conducting a separate investigation.

An autopsy was expected to be carried out in Invercargill on Monday.

Friends pay tribute to Child Abuse Unit Detective Joshua Paroci

THE “larger than life” detective who drowned in a rafting accident in New Zealand was on a buck’s weekend with his colleague, who is due to marry next month.

Friends who worked with the Child Abuse Unit’s detective Senior Constable Joshua Paroci paid tribute to their colleague who pursued criminals with dogged determination.

The 31-year-old was due to return to work at Parramatta with his close friend, detective Senior Constable Robert Popovic, last week after they went to New Zealand four weeks before the wedding.

The two had trained together at the police academy in Goulburn and formed a tight bond. They were on the trip with three friends when tragedy struck.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Grech, who was Sen-Constable Paroci’s team leader at Parramatta, said Sen-Constable Popovic had been left devastated by the accident that claimed his mate’s life when a raft overturned in rapids at Skippers Canyon, near Queenstown, on May 19.

Sen-Constable Paroci, who was married and the father of a four-year-old boy, was one of six Australians on the raft.

“He’s pretty shattered,’’ Sen-Sgt Grech said of Sen-Constable Popovic.

“He’s talking about not having the wedding.

“He’s very close to his friend. They were bosom buddies. It was a buck’s trip, so there was lots of planning involved. It’s the time of their life.”

He said Sen-Constable Paroci had been in the squad for 18 months and “made a lot of noise” until he saw justice prevail.

“He was big in stature and larger than life on the floor,’’ he said.

“It impacts the office really significantly.”

Squad commander detective Superintendent John Kerlatec also praised Sen-Constable Paroci.

“Josh was a tireless worker, dedicated to investigating some of the most heinous crimes against children,” he said. “Not only was he a police officer, he was completing a law degree, which he intended to use to create better outcomes for young victims.”

Maritime New Zealand and the coroner are investigating.

Australian police officer dies in rafting accident near Queenstown, New Zealand

Updated

An Australian man who died during a rafting trip in New Zealand’s South Island has been identified as 31-year-old Joshua Paroci of New South Wales.

A New South Wales police officer, Detective Senior Constable Paroci was reportedly with five other Australians on the raft, operated by Challenge Rafting, which overturned on rapids on the Shotover River, north of Queenstown.

Police colleagues have described him as well respected and an excellent detective who would be sorely missed.

In a statement, the rafting company said the raft overturned about 3:45pm on Saturday near the Toilet Rapids at Skippers Canyon.

The company said the rafters followed standard rescue procedures when they were pitched into the water.

Detective Senior Constable Paroci lost his grip on the rescue rope as the raft was being towed to a bank and he was swept through another rapid.

Attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him on the shore failed.

Another member of the same group was injured and received treatment at a New Zealand hospital.

Queenstown Rafting general manager Luke Taylor said he and his staff were devastated by the incident.

“Our hearts go out to our guests and the families of those involved in this. Both our companies wish to offer the group our sincere condolences and ongoing support,” Mr Taylor said.

In a statement, NSW Police said Detective Senior Constable Paroci joined the force in 2008 and was a member of the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

His wife is also a police officer.

“Detective Senior Constable Paroci was well respected by all those who knew him and the police family will rally around his loved ones during this difficult time,” Commissioner Mick Fuller said.

Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec, the Commander of the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, said the 31-year-old was “a tireless worker, dedicated to investigating some of the most heinous crimes against children”.

“His passion was justice for victims,” he said, adding that the young detective was completing a law degree which he had hoped to use to further help young victims.

“Josh was inspirational and everywhere he worked he turned colleagues into mates; today we mourn the loss of our good mate.”

Police said Detective Senior Constable Paroci’s family had asked for privacy at this time.

The rafting company voluntarily suspended operations until further notice, and Maritime New Zealand is investigating the incident.

New Zealand Police confirmed Detective Senior Constable Paroci’s death in a statement and offered “their condolences to Mr Paroci’s family and friends at this difficult time”.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance.

Thank you for the page on Lawrence Blake Leonard.  I thought you might be interested to know he had a brother in the NSW Police & another in the Queensland Police.  I understand William was posted to Moulamein, Broken Hill and then Albury.  The following is copied from Trove : Western Herald 1 Jul 1903
Constable William Leonard, brother of Constable J. B. Leonard, of Enngonia, died on Friday last at the Hospital, Albury, from pueumonia. Deceased was a married man and about 37 years of age. Very general sympathy is extended to both Mr and Mrs Leonard, who have each lost a brother within a few days, and also to the young widow and remainder of the family.
William had married Emily Theresa Stevens in Moulamein.
A third brother, Joseph Blake Leonard, joined the Queensland Police.  This is from the Daily Mercury, Mackay (Trove) 1939
Many friends will regret the passing of Mr. Joseph Blake Leonard, who was a retired Sergeant of Police, death taking place in Brisbane on Monday last. The late Mr. Leonard spent many years in Mackay, and after serving a short period in the North, went to Gayndah. After his retirement Mr. and Mrs. Leonard built a home at Ashgrove, where Mrs. Leonard died in 1938. Their son, Blake, survives them.
The three were the children of James Leonard, (an assisted emigrant from Woodford Galway in 1850) and his wife Catherine Blake.  All three were born at Jerrara, Goulburn, New South Wales.  James was a farmer.
I can send further family details.
Kind regards
Wendy Meredith

It was my privilege to know you and call you my friend. I will never forget the time we travelled to Darwin to say goodbye to “Merro” – another good bloke taken from us too soon. The period we worked together at OSTU are amongst the happiest memories of my life and I thank you for sharing it with me.
My heart goes out to your family you all had so much more to look forward to in the years ahead.
Goodbye my friend.

Always in my thoughts my friend you will be dearly missed I know where you are going you will be surrounded by former brothers in blue. Another angel to protect us.

Published in Goulburn Post on Jan. 21, 2019

On the 13th of January, surrounded by the ones he loved, the world lost a gentleman. A kind soul that filled everyone who ever had the honour of meeting him with happiness. His infectious laugh and his mischievous pranks were like no other. The way he would jump around the room, wake us up with a cup of ice then run away giggling… it’s a memory I will never forget.

His dedication to his job, and his unwavering loyalty to his colleagues, who he considered family, earned him the respect of hundreds of people across the world.

The love he shares with his partner will last until the end of time. An unbreakable bond between two of the kindest souls that gave me hope for the future. A woman I respect and will forever be grateful to for everything she ever did for him and for loving him so deeply.

I had the honour of calling this man my Dad. My hero. My protector. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for me or my siblings. His gentle voice, his patience, the way he protected us so fiercely.

My children and my nieces and nephews had the honour of calling him Poppy Tom. He was always wrestling with them, laughing with them, watching cartoons and laughing harder than anyone else in the room. Watching his strength and love while he carried my baby boy in his coffin had me in awe.

Fly high Dad, and watch over my boy.

Until I see you again. I love you.

Officers farewell one of their own

(No photo came up)…..

The guard of honour that paid tribute to Senior Constable Renae Landgraf. Hundreds of friends and colleagues gathered to farewell the senior constable at St Brigid’s Catholic Church yesterday.

The drums sounded and police officers saluted as they farewelled one of their own yesterday.

Senior Constable Renae Landgraf, nee Spackman, died as a result of health complications last Friday, at the age of 31.

Her sudden death has rocked Dubbo’s police family and the wider community.

Accompanied by his three sons and baby daughter, Steve Landgraf, an officer himself, was surrounded by hundreds of friends and colleagues as he farewelled his beloved wife yesterday at St Brigid’s Catholic Church.

Speaking on behalf of the family yesterday, Nicole Muir, Jodi George and Carly Stephens painted a beautiful picture of Renae’s life, moving from Western Australia at a young age with her family and residing in Narromine, where she completed her schooling and started work.

In 2001 Renae achieved her dream of being accepted into the Goulburn Police Academy, where she later graduated as probationary constable Renae Spackman.

Renae transferred to Dubbo Police Station in 2005, the same year she married her long-time friend Steve Landgraf, which her family remembers as being the happiest time of her life.

In marrying Steve, Renae welcomed with loving arms his two sons Connor and Harris and then in 2007, Renae was blessed with her first child, Ethan.

In February this year Steve and Renae had their second child, baby girl Mackenzie.

Family members said while Renae’s life was short-lived, she was able to achieve all she had dreamed to achieve and that was to become a police officer, a wife and a mother to a son and a daughter.

As a person, friends and family described Renae as being energetic, loving, fun and ambitious.

She was an extremely dedicated, mother, wife and police officer who worked hard and stuck her neck out for other people.

Superintendent Stan Single read a valedictory at the funeral outlining Renae’s police service and a description of her achievements and commendations.

Renae’s police service follows her father Neil’s army service and the policing career of her husband and role model uncle Peter.

Together with police colleagues a large contingent of nursing and medical staff attended the funeral in support of Renae’s mother, Sandra.

Renae will be remembered by her peers and family for her insistence in having all things right.

Her insistency on right and wrong and her compassion, dedication and work ethic are qualities she has imposed upon a number of junior police she has helped train.

Following the service, one section of Brisbane Street was closed off and Renae’s fellow officers, including drummers marched in front of the hearse as it made its way to the New Dubbo Cemetery for the burial.

Officers on bikes led the procession, and marked police cars transported the family.

NATIONAL POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY
TRIBUTE TO SENIOR CONSTABLE RENAE CAROLINE LANDGRAF
Page: 18486

Mrs DAWN FARDELL (Dubbo) [6.41 p.m.]: On Tuesday 29 September ( 2009 ) I attended the National Police Remembrance Day service held in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Brisbane Street, Dubbo, at the invitation of Ross Godfrey, Police Chaplain. Similar services were held around New South Wales on that day, which no doubt many other members of this Parliament attended. The Reverend Canon Roger Zohrab, Rector of Holy Trinity Dubbo, carried out the welcome and invocation. Scripture readings and the homily followed by Police Chaplain David Warner, CGS. The solo of Amazing Grace was beautifully sung by David Cooper, RNS Dubbo. Superintendent Stan Single, APM, the Commander of the Orana Local Area Command, addressed the congregation. Police Chaplain David Warner said prayers for the New South Wales police.

Constable Jason Blake, who had not been a member of the police force for very long, read the roll of honour. I will list the names of those members of the New South Wales Police Force deceased during the period 29 September 2008 to 28 September 2009: Sergeant Sean Stephen Lamerton, General Administrative Support Officer Jane Gardiner, Constable Morgan James Hill, Probationary Constable Mason Hammond, Senior Constable Lindsay “Guy” Winkley, Senior Constable Janice Anne Hennessy, Senior Constable Ian West, Constable Gilbert Joseph Roussel and Senior Constable Renae Caroline Landgraf. Renae was one of our own from Dubbo.

Senior Constable Renae Landgraf, nee Spackman, unfortunately lost her life in May this year at the age of 31 as a result of health complications. Her sudden death has rocked the Dubbo police family and wider community. Accompanied by his three sons and baby daughter, Steve Landgraf, an officer himself, was surrounded by hundreds of friends and colleagues as he farewelled his beloved wife at St Brigid’s Catholic Church. In 2001 Renae achieved her dream of being accepted into the Goulburn Police Academy, where she later graduated as Probationary Constable Renae Spackman. Renae transferred to Dubbo Police Station in 2005. In the same year she married her long-time friend Steve, which her family remembers as being the happiest time of her life.

In marrying Steve, Renae welcomed with loving arms his two sons Connor and Harris. In 2007 Renae was blessed with her first child, Ethan. In February this year Steve and Renae had their second child, baby girl Mackenzie. Family members said that, while Renae’s life was short, she was able to achieve all she had dreamed of achieving: becoming a police officer, a wife and a mother to a son and a daughter. Friends and family described Renae as being energetic, loving, fun and ambitious. She was an extremely dedicated mother, wife and police officer who worked hard and stuck her neck out for other people. Superintendent Stan Single read a valedictory at the funeral outlining Renae’s police service and a description of her achievements and commendations. Renae’s police service followed her father Neil’s army service and the policing careers of her husband and role model uncle Peter.

Together with police colleagues, a large contingent of nursing and medical staff attended the funeral in support of Renae’s mother, Sandra. It was a sad and tragic day when Renae passed away. Renae was a vibrant community member. I knew of Renae well and the work she did with the youth in our Dubbo community. Sandra used to attend the National Police Remembrance Day service each year with Renae. She was a true Briton to attend the service on her own this year. It was a tough day for Sandra but hopefully in time it will become easier for her. Renae and Steve’s children Steven, Connor, Harris, Ethan and Mackenzie are in the good hands of their surrounding family and the police force family, as it is known. Our sympathy goes to them all. The National Police Remembrance Day reminds us of the hard work the police perform in our community but it is very tough when it involves one of our own.

We’re very proud to be supporting Ballina Police Station in their fundraising efforts for Detective Senior Constable Alison Sheehan while she undergoes a combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy to fight her rare Cancer diagnosis. Book your tickets to the Wig out for Cancer on Friday 28th of November to show your support. https://wigoutforcancer.gofundraise.com.au/cms/home

Surprise cancer diagnosis put Ali in fight for her life

WHEN Alison Sheehan went to her GP complaining of back pain following a freak fall at home several weeks before, the last thing she expected was a cancer diagnosis.

Alison Gaille SHEEHAN

But this is the cruel reality facing the 33-year-old mother of one, detective, and children’s cancer fundraising champion.

“She had a number of tests and eventually they diagnosed her with breast cancer and, unfortunately, the legions had spread to her spine and lymph nodes,” friend and colleague Donna Tutt said.

“Ali has been told when she beats cancer she may be faced with a significant disability due to the damage to her spine.”

While Ms Sheehan undergoes treatment at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra hospital, her partner Adam had to resign from his job as a manager at the Byron Bay Brewery to care for 18-month-old Jack, who suffers EoE, an allergy related inflammation of the oesophagus, which results in difficulty swallowing, chest discomfort and heartburn.

A regular fundraiser for children’s cancer sufferers in the region, earlier this year, Ms Sheehan helped raise money for Jacob Mercy-Ireland who has osteosarcoma.

“Ali cut all of her hair off to raise money and then donated it to “Beautiful Lengths” – a Pantene charity that makes wigs for chemo patients.”

A former constable with Lismore PCYC, Ms Sheehan did a lot of work with youth from the Lismore region before she was transferred to the ranks of Byron Bay detectives two years ago.

“She was the dux of our original class 14 years ago and she was the dux of the detectives’ class as well – so she had a huge career ahead of her.”

To support Ms Sheehan and her fight against cancer, Ms Tutt has organised the Paddle for Ali, on October 26.

“Come and support someone local who has been a huge fundraiser for children’s cancer.”

Participants will paddle nine kilometres along the Brunswick River, from Heritage Park, Mullumbimby, to Banner Park, Brunswick Heads. “Any type of non-motorised watercraft can be used, from canoes, to kayaks, skis and surfboards.”

An event safety briefing will be held at 9.30am, with the paddle to start at 10am.

On arrival at Banner Park, a barbecue and raffle will be held, with all proceeds going toward Ms Sheehan’s fundraising campaign.

People who are unable to paddle can still donate at any Westpac branch.

Superintendent Henry ‘Harry’ GRUGEON
Born c1855 at Edmonton, England.
Died 10/1/1911, Deniliquin, NSW.
32 years service.
Buried Deniliquin, NSW
1881. Married Johannah HENNESSY, Deniliquin, NSW
1897. Promoted from Senior Sergeant to Sub Inspector
1898. Was a Sub Inspector at Narrandera.

15/10/1898, in the Australian Town and Country news paper.
The police district is under the control of Sub-inspector Grugeon, and the local force comprises, in addition, four footmen and three troopers. The gaol is in charge of Senior constable Bowman.

1906. Promoted from Sub Inspector to Inspector
1906-1909. Would appear that he was stationed at Parramatta as an Inspector
1909. Promoted from Inspector to Superintendent.

17/7/1909, Evening News Newspaper
Police Superintendent Grugeon was entertained at the Woolpack Hotel, Parramatta, at a farewell fraternal gathering, on the eve of his departure for Deniliquin to take charge of the South Western Police District. The Mayor (Alderman Haugh) presided, and there was a large attendance of prominent residents, magistrates, court officials, and others.
Among the speakers were Colonel Ferris, -ex -Superintendent Brennan, Mr. M. S. Love, S.M., Superintendent Day, Mr. G. Addison, C.P.S. and Parramatta Chamber Magistrate, Father O’Reilly, Dr. Kearney, and Sergeant Lucas.

During the evening Mr. Love, on behalf of the court officials, handed Superintendent Grugeon a cheque with which to buy a buggy on his arrival at Deniliquin. (Note that he was given a cheque to buy a buggy)

14/1/1911, Nepean Times.

FATAL BUGGY ACCIDENT.
Superintendent of Police Henry Grugeon, of Deniliquin, died about 6 o’clock on Tuesday morning, as the result of a buggy accident. It appears that the superintendent was out driving in his buggy, with a pair of horses, accompanied by his son Stephen and daughter Mary. The horses became restive on Mathoura road, about three and a half miles from Deniliquin, and bolted, and, on turning short, the buggy capsized, throwing the occupants out.

Mr Grugeon fell on his head, and received several nasty cuts on the head and face. He was unconscious.
His son at once went to the freezing works and telephoned to Dr. Marsden, who went out and brought Mr Grugeon to his home, where he was attended by Dr Marsden and Hoskin, but never regained consciousness.
The son and daughter received only a few scratches.
Mr Grugeon was inspector in charge of Parramatta before being appointed superintendent at Deniliquin.
At the Parramatta Police Court on Tuesday sympathetic reference was made to the death of Superintendent Grugeon by Mr E L Maitland, S.M., by Mr E K Bowden on behalf of the legal profession, and by Inspector Bedingfield ( possibly Q # 2799 ) (deceased’s successor at Parramatta) on behalf of the police.

His death was also mentioned in ‘The Argus’ Melbourne. Not transcribed.

He left a wife, 6 daughters and 3 sons. His wife Johannah died 28/7/1945 at Lewisham Private Hospital 28/7/1945.

2/1/2019, Deniliquin Times.

HARRY GRUGEON

Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 – 1950), Saturday 26 August 1911, page 6

On Sunday afternoon (reports the Deniliquin ‘Independent’ of August 18) a large number of representative towns people, including the aldermen, of the municipality, attended at the local cemetery to witness the unveiling of the beautiful monument erected by a section of the police force of New South Wales, to perpetuate the memory of the Late Superintendent Grugeon, who was killed by an unfortunate buggy accident in January last.
All the members of the local police force were present.
Messrs. J. and H. ( Harry ) Grugeon, two of deceased’s sons, had also journeyed to Deniliquin, to be present at the ceremony.
The monument is a beautiful piece of work, and was executed by Messrs. Wilson and Co., of Bendigo, which firm was represented at the unveiling by Mr. H. M. Hammer.
The design is a very choice one, being a pedestal with carved drapery, surmounted by a beautifully carved figure representing an angel with arm extended dropping flowers on the grave beneath. The pedestal and figure are worked from the best Carram marble. The monument is supported by a base of Harcourt granite, with two sets of kerbings of the same stone. Marble posts with marble kerbings, neatly moulded, take the place of the customary iron railing, while the inside of the grave is covered with black and white marble tiles.
The monument bears the inscription, ‘In memory of Harry Grugeon, Esq., J.P., Superintendent of Police, Deniliquin, died 10th January, 1911, as the result of a buggy accident.
Aged 56 years.
‘Thy will be done, O Lord.’
Erected as a mark of esteem by the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the New South Wales Police Force.”

POLICE MEMORIAL.

In the early part of this year, the popular Superintendent of Police at Deniliquin Mr. Harry Grugeon, J.P., died from injuries received in a buggy accident and since then the members of the New South Wales police force have decided to commemorate his memory by the erection of a monument over his grave in the Deniliquin Cemetery.

The design selected is very choice, being a pedestal with carved drapery surrounded by a beautifully carved figure representing an angel with arm extended dropping flower’s on to the grave beneath. The pedestal and figure are worked from the best Carrara marble. The monument is supported by a base of Harcourt granite with two sets of kerbings of the same stone. Marble posts with marble kerbing neatly moulded take the place of the customary iron railing while the inside of the grave is to be covered with black and white marble.

The inscription has been cut out and filled with lead, making it of a lasting character. It reads thus: – ” In memory of Harry Grugeon, Esq. J.P. Superintendent of Police, Deniliquin, died on January 10, 1911, as the result of a buggy accident. Aged 56 years. Thy Will be done O Lord. Erected as a mark of esteem by the officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the New South Wales police. ”

The work has been entrusted to Messrs J. B. Wilson and Co., the well known firm of monumental sculptors of this city and is being prepared by them at their works in Mitchell street.
